Siliguri, 20 March: The Trinamul Congress candidate for the Darjeeling Lok Sabha constituency, Baichung Bhutia, today said BJP candidate for the Hills SS Ahluwalia is contesting the elections on ‘false promises’ of Gorkhaland.
“In the last elections, BJP candidate Jaswant Singh had contested in the Hills and promised Gorkhaland, but nothing happened. This time again, the same false promises are being given to the people in the Hills,” Mr Bhutia said.
“The BJP candidate will suffer defeat and the party will not be able to come to the power (at the Centre),” he told reporters on the sidelines of his meeting with lawyers of the Siliguri Bar Association.
Senior Trinamul Congress leaders, including north Bengal development minister Gautam Deb, accompanied Mr Bhutia during the poll campaign on the court premises.
Upon his arrival in Siliguri yesterday, Mr Ahluwalia had spoken in favour of a tiny state in the Hills.
Mr Bhutia today appealed to members of the Siliguri Bar Association to vote for him.
“Mr (Jaswant) Singh did not take any initiative for the development of the Hills. In many places, I have seen people denied basic facilities. People did not get roads, drinking water, health care facilities and electricity. The young generation is losing the faith. He did not utilise the MPLAD (MP local area development) funds. If elected, I will do politics honestly, and not by making false promises,” he said.
