DEBASIS BHOWMIK, Siliguri, 15 Mar 2014:Reacting to the arrest of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha leader Bimal Darjee and warrants issued for other leaders, CPM veteran and former Left Front minister Ashok Bhattacharya today slammed the Trinamool Congress led state government for applying force to suppress the voice of the hill people. He described Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s decision to apprehend GJM leaders as a ‘tyrannical step’ and added she is forcing the party to withdraw its support to BJP.
Addressing a press conference today at the Anil Biswas Bhawan, the CPM party office, Bhattacharya said the state government is practicing the politics of “counter violence” which could prove catastrophic for democracy.
He said the relation between Trinamool and GJM was sweet until the hill party agreed to all the orders given by CM. But all of a sudden GJM found itself facing the CM’s wrath after it announced support to BJP. Trinamool Congress is playing pressure tactics in the hills to get the upper hand over GJM, added the former minister.
The CPM leader claimed the erstwhile Left Front government had never used force and violence to choke the voices of the opposition parties before any elections. But the present state government is deliberately trying to snatch away the democratic right of other political parties in the state in an attempt to establish totalitarian rule.
