Members of Anjuman-e-Islamiya, Darjeeling yesterday held a rally to protest against Wakf Board trying to usurp the A-e-I property in Darjeeling.
According to members of A-e-I in Darjeeling, a Kolkata based lawyer Akbar Ali and three others had conspired to usurp the properties belonging to A-e-I, Darjeeling and show them as that of Wakf Board.
The protesters met with Darjeeling DM Anurag Shrivastav and submitted a petition, asking him to revoke the handing over of Darjeeling A-e-I to Wakf Board.
Speaking on behalf of the protestors, Mr. Mohammad Numar said that “Wakf Board is illegally trying to take over the property belonging to Darjeeling. We want to know who handed over Darjeeling Anjuman to Wakf Board… no one has any clue… Anjuman is not just the property of Darjeeling Muslims, but also every people of Darjeeling… we have protested against inclusion of Anjuman in Wakf Board since 1909, even in 1939 Darjeeling Muslims had protested against such a move… there is no proof on the part of Wakf Board that this belongs to them… this property was a gift from Darjeeling Municipality to Darjeeling Muslims, and it was not given to the Wakf Board.”
Mr. Numar said, “if they show us proper proof and documentation, we wouldn’t have any problem… now they have formed a board consisting of SDO and others from Kolkata and have changed identity of our organization from Anjuman-e-Islamia Darjeeling to Anjuman-e-Islamiya Wakf Estate on 13th of October, 2016… all of Darjeeling needs to protest against this… This property does not belong to Wakf Board.”
According to Darjeeling Anjuman members, “The only legal document that Wakf Board has to show is a 1939 letter written by the then Anjuman president Late. Abdul Aziz, who had written to the Wakf Board inquiring if Darjeeling Anjuman can be included in Wakf. He had specifically mentioned that ‘Darjeeling is an excluded area, the udnersigned (President Darjeeling Anjuman) has no information if the act has been summarily extended to this area’…. so when Darjeeling was not a part of Bengal, how can a law passed for Bengal be implemented to our region?”
Muslim community members have said that this illegal usurping of Anjuman property in Darjeeling can pose grave problems for not only Muslims, but also for the people of Darjeeling, and have sought support from the general public to protest against this move by the Wakf Board.
