The Triveni where river Teesta and Rangit converge, also known as ‘Lover’s Meet’ is not just a popular tourist destination, but it also carries immense cultural and religious significance to the people of Darjeeling hills.
Their greed unsatiated, the Bengal government and NHPC are now planning two more dams which will obliterate the existence of Triveni altogether.
Thankfully, this time around politicians from our hills are speaking with the same voice in opposing the dams.
GJM General Secretary Mr. Roshan Giri said, “Triveni is an important religious place for us hill dwellers, we will not allow a hydro dam to be built here… if we permit a dam to come up on Triveni then not just the people living near Teesta, but the future and fate of entire hill people will be put under threat… we will nor let any dam to be built in Triveni.”
JAP Chief Dr. Harka B Chettri also spoke on the same lines and said, “if NHPC tries to forcefully implement the project then we will hit the roads in protest… NDPC built Teesta stage 3 and 4 dams without conducting proper studies, Environmental Impact Assessments, proper clearances from various ministries… we will not let that happen again.”
He added, “these hydro dams have not benefited the hills at all, instead our biodiversity, flora, fauna, our homes and our livelihood have been ruined… so we will not permit any more hydro dams in our region..”
Protesting against the proposed dams, CPI(M) leader Tara Sundas said, “The entire Teesta belt falls in a sinking zone and already there is a threat that the existing dams pose to the entire region, it can collapse any day… we will protest against any more dams on Teesta.”
He further said, “today our people can see the negative impacts of Teesta dams on the people of Kalijhora and 27th Mile, and also on our environment… we cannot allow this to happen again… everyone from our hills should speak against these dams.”
