Dear Readers,

Welcome to another edition of Darjeeling Today! We thank you for your overwhelming response and good wishes. However, Slow and Steady seems to be the right strategy for us under the present circumstances.

Currently, Darjeeling is under tremendous pressure, our town is in a great dilemma and is probably on the verge of facing a new turning point. The need of the hour is Unity, our people ought to unite and prepare our town for a brighter future. Trying to escape reality and indulging in In-fighting will not help us in any way, as a result, we have created vacuum within us, under such circumstances lending hands are visible all around us, which might not be a true helping hand.

The Reign of Terror of the ‘80s silenced the voices of the people during the violent agitation. Consequently, the hills were filled with a disillusioned populace.  Darjeeling suffered for 21 years not because of violence of bad people but because of the silence of good people. Now, opportunity should be created for the people to speak up, let the people decide their own fate than by few individuals, it is high time that they be returned their voices. Public consensus should be prioritized, else chances of history repeating itself is high.

Unexpectedly, the onset of winter in Darjeeling this year was marked by a series of amusement and entertainment events, a rarity in the town for many years now. From Beauty Pageants to Rock contests and Football tournaments, our town was caught in a frenzy of activities, evidently indicated the motivated objectives, which was projected as  normalcy being restored, however, the audience in each of the programmes  were far less in number  when compared to the throng that gathers in political rallies.

In the realm of our society, Promises are being made, History is being written every passing hour and   we are keeping track of each event because it concerns us, our values, our people, our land, our Darjeeling … Perhaps, had we been socially conscious before we would not be in the state we are in today. We reside in a place where there are No proper medical facilities, No electricity when children are preparing for their exams, No drinking water, No higher educational institutions, No mid-day meals  for poor children, No employment opportunities for the educated.… the list is endless, there is only a big NO everywhere in the hills. Therefore the people of The Hills are in an indescribable state of utter helplessness and hopelessness. Can one expect to fabricate a good society with an empty stomach and a disturbed soul? All we can do is love our home town, Darjeeling and hope that we see the light of a brighter day soon.

With warm regards

Udhyan Chamling Rai

Dear Readers,

Time seems to be flying faster than expected. Before we realize, we are already lagging behind schedule. Perhaps this is the way of life here in Darjeeling - Self centredness, Hooliganism, Incompetence at work, lack of social unity and civic sense –pushes us far behind and alienates us from the rest of the world, the glorious Queen of hills of one time, Darjeeling.

Dear Readers,

Welcome to the 17th Edition of DarjeelingTimes. We have been finding ourselves on difficult financial ground due to our weak Marketing sector, which consequently led us to skip our last edition. However, your overwhelming response and support make us committed to the consistency of this only Magazine from the hills.

Dear Readers,

Warm New Year wishes from the team of DarjeelingTimesDotCom, we welcome you to our 16th Edition.

With great expectations, the luring year 2010 begins…. the chilly winters  of  Darjeeling hills went blisteringly hot with – Processions, Meetings, Gheraos, Bandhs, Road  blockades-activities from all corners of the hills and adjoining plains were evidently conspicuous, more are expected in the coming days.  Voices from Darjeeling hills have been reverberating persistently beyond its boundaries, but the strategies to further our marginalized voices should be tactful and revered by all or there will be every possibility of History repeating itself.  All political powers are expected to try their ‘kismet’ this year but the common man of Darjeeling is anxiously awaiting ‘A day of Change’.

The much hyped Fourth Tripartite Talks is over with a positive ultimatum. Three hours’ closed door meeting among GJMM, West Bengal government and Central government at Mayfair Resort, Darjeeling, created much curiosity. On our special request, Mr. Amar  Rai, one of the participants, writes exclusively for the people of Darjeeling hills, the inside story of Fourth Tripartite Talks, right from the Meeting venue – The Minutes. Please do find here as Cover Story of our 16th Edition of DarjeelingTimesDotCom.

Darjeeling has been inimitable in every field it explored, it has its own history of proficiencies, one of them is “Drama”. Nepali Drama completed a Century just last year. Thanks to Lt. Col. Mangal Singh Subba (Retd) for compiling the complete account of Nepali Drama in this Edition.

We are also grateful to Dr. Sonam Wangyal, an icon of Darjeeling hills and Dooars, for his wonderful art of writing and deep insight into various aspects of our society. Thank you for your contribution and inspiration for the up-coming generation.

Lastly, as always we would like to have your suggestions, opinions and your love towards Darjeeling hills. Let’s contribute to our mother-land whatever we can, let’s not forget our roots…

Wishing “Grungy Morphins” all the best for “Metal Fest Open Air 2010” contest to be held in Austria.

With warm regards,

Udhyan Rai
