KM vice president Jayan Lepcha was among the officials along with the police who toured town to stop illegal occupation of the footpaths by hawkers. The hawkers were asked to vacate the footpaths at the earliest or face stringent repercussions.
Dozens of small businesspersons earn their daily bread by running small outlets at roadsides all over town. But they are squeezing out the vacant space available. This was the second time the civic administration has taken steps to set things after the demise of municipality chairman LB Pariyar a few months ago.
The team of municipal officials took stock of Main Road, CK Chowk, RC Mintri Road and other places in town. Lepcha said instead of forcibly removing the hawkers, they have given a stern warning to vacate voluntarily. If the hawkers fail to obey the direction, the town administration will have no option but to act stringently against them, he added.
The municipality has on many occasions tried to remove roadside hawkers but without success. It is hopeful of seeing some success with the latest drive, but the hapless hawkers apparently have no other means to feed their families. (EOIC)
