In a stringent order, the Calcutta High Court on Friday ruled that police can initiate criminal proceedings against any person under sections 420 (cheating) and 419 (punishment for cheating by personation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for misuse of beacons on vehicles. The provisions entail a maximum of three years in jail, though the offence is bailable.
DARJEELING, 17 MAY: Leaders of the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) today said that they have taken up the issue related to the state government’s recent notice asking traders based in the three sub-divisions of the Darjeeling Hills to pay the sale taxes left accumulating for years with the Chief Minister, Miss Mamata Banerjee, during her just-concluded Hill trip.
Blaming a section of people in the hills and some opposition political parties for spreading canards, GJM leader said the recent visit of CM foiled the bid.
Kolkata: The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha on Friday said the recent visit of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to Darjeeling has removed the "miscommunication" between the West Bengal government and the party. GJM leader Harka Bahadur Chhetri said, "There was a miscommunication with the the state...the problem is over now with her (Mamata) recent visit to the Darjeeling hills for development work for the people there."
Darjeeling, May 16: Delegation of Hill Trinamool congress consisting of 15 TMC activists headed by the hill convener Rajen Mukhia met Mamata Banerjee for some time in Darjeeling today. Chief Minister was delighted meeting us, expressed Rajen Mukhia. We have also submitted a memorandum soliciting for employments for educated youths of the hills, she has assured for the same, said Rajan Mukhia.

SILIGURI, 14 MAY: The All India Gorkha League would observe the third death anniversary of its slain leader, Madan Tamang, in Darjeeling on 21 May. The party is set to observe the day by paying floral tributes at the deceased leader’s plaque that was installed on the spot near the Planters’ Club where he was hacked to death allegedly by GJMM activists in broad daylight in 2010. This aside, a public meeting is likely to be held at Chawk Bazar where the party leaders might recall his contribution to establishment of democratic discourse in violence-scarred Hills.
