The film industry is back to romancing West Bengal’s favourite hill station
Ranbir Kapoor and the Barfee crew may have found the love they received in the hills of Darjeeling a bit too overwhelming. They had to pack up and leave because the crowds were unmanageable, but it seems that Darjeeling is back in the good books of film crews.
Back in the 1960s and 1970s, the likes of Rajesh Khanna, Zeenat Aman and Sharmila Tagore would regularly camp at Darjeeling in order to shoot song sequences. In fact, there was a time when it was said that you couldn’t visit the hill station without bumping into a yoodling Rajesh Khanna (remember mere sapnon ki rani) or a simpering Sharmila Tagore. Thanks to Aradhana and Anurodh, the idea of visiting a hill station like

SILIGURI, 24 JUNE: Apparently recovering from the electoral drubbing, the former state urban development minister, Mr Asok Bhattacharya, sarcastically advised the new state government to go slow on development.
“The members of the new government should remember the adage that one moves faster when one is not in a hurry,” he said during a media conference in Siliguri yesterday.
Banerjee gave Bengal the revolution it wanted but people will want to see results soon Aditi Phadnis: A question of answers
It is now more than a month since Mamata Banerjee and her Trinamool Congress-Congress-I alliance government assumed power in West Bengal.
What has the government achieved and where is the state going?
No one said Bengal would have an easy time of it when she took over. Apart from her own – for the lack of a better word, foibles – the collective lack of administrative experience of her colleagues and the political compulsion of producing quick results, Banerjee has also had to contend with the highly politicised middle bureaucracy in the state and its proven aversion to work.
- Centre summons nerve to raise diesel & kerosene prices; Mamata dissents
June 24: The Centre tonight came close to matching the domestic record in cooking gas price hike and made holy-cow fuels like diesel and kerosene costlier, using an election-free window and springing an unpalatable option on critics such as Mamata Banerjee.
LPG prices were raised by an average Rs 50 per cylinder, 55 paise shy of the sharpest hike that the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government was forced to impose in 2000. However, the latest Calcutta price will go up by Rs 52 because of the impact of local taxes. Diesel prices have gone up by Rs 3 and kerosene by Rs 2 a litre.

The protest was organised by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha-affiliated Janmukti United Labour Welfare Organisation (BSNL Security Guards Sector). The striking guards also closed down the BSNL office in Darjeeling and held a demonstration.
