MUKESH SHARMA, Kalimpong, July 30: A youth was attacked by a bear in the jungles of Kafer today. According to the information received, the youth Pemba Sherpa (aged 33) had gone to the Gumpa Dara, Kafer at around 12 noon to check the water connection pipe. While Sherpa was busy checking the connection a bear out of nowhere attacked him. During the tussle with the bear for around half an hour Sherpa incurred head injuries. The Khukri which Sherpa was carrying however helped Sherpa save his life from the bear. In the meanwhile, the locals of the surrounding area overheard Sherpa’s screams and ran towards the jungle for his rescue. By the time the locals reached the spot the bear managed to flee.

At present, Sherpa is receiving medical treatment at the Kalimpong Sub Divisional hospital.
