Darjeeling, August 2: Khas Bhatatiya Hitkari Sammelan, an association of Chettri, Bahun, Thakuri and Sanyasi (Giri, Puri, Bharati) has been decided to include a title ‘Khas’ in front of their surname (e.g. Khas Chettri, Khas Bahun, Khas Thakuri etc.), the decision was taken in a meeting held on July 31 in Darjeeling, the meeting was presided over by R P Niraula. The Meeting also passed the Resolution on the issue of Khas religion, The Khas people should be mentioned as ‘Masto’ religion, which is their ancient religion.
Khas were never Aryans, they were even participated in the war of Mahabaharata, allied with Kauravas. Khas are Nature worshipers and have their own ancient religion. During the advent of Ghoraknath in Nepal in 16 century, Khas were influenced by Hindu and adopted the religion as Hindu, however, Khas has its own custom, culture, rituals etc. which is absolutely different than Hindu, which is still being practiced by the Khas people. On these bases, The Khas Association has been demanding a Schedule Tribe status in India. The West Bengal government has already recommended the Khas as Schedule tribe. The Schedule tribe status for Khas is being processed in Central level. Association also appeals to all Khas people to assist for the same.
