Mukesh Sharma, Kalimpong, July 5: incessant rain resulted the first major landslide at NH31(A), 31 Mile Birik Dara, which brought highway to a total halt of 8 hours. The road connecting to Kalimpong and Sikkim was totally cut off from rest of India due to heavy landslide, about 8 km long jam was occurred from both side of the highway as 3 JCB and 1 excavator were used for clearing the stones and mud. Many tourists and passenger vehicles were stuck in the jam, transit of passengers and tourists were allowed after 2 pm, later police diverted the vehicles from Teesta and Mungpoo. Last year the same area created the similar problems due to frequent slides after which GREF and BRO started widening the road, the locals have said that the widening of road is a cause for today's landslide. The highway was restored for one way traffic at 6 pm. Teesta, Likuveer, 29 mile, Virik Sara and Sevoke are sensational areas in NH31(A) which lies under Kalimpong subdivision.
