At 3636 meters, Sandakpu is the highest point in Darjeeling, and every year thousands of locals, national and international tourists head to Sandakpu to see one of Mother Nature’s most gorgeous creations.
Situated on top of the Singalila National Park range, Sandakpu and Phalut offer one of the rarest sights in the world, from here you get to see four of the five highest peaks in the world, Everest, Kangchenjunga, Lhotse and Makalu can be seen from its summit. It also affords a pristine view of the entire Kangchenjunga Range.
Yet, for decades there have been no efforts geared towards cleaning up this place.
All of that changed, when volunteers from WWF, GTA tourism Trekkers Hut staff and Rimbick Manebhanjaing Guide Association, Sandakphu Lodge, Hotel Members and Singalila Land Rover Association joined hands and got together to clean up the entire range from Sandakpu to Phalut on the 04th of December, 2016.
Among the garbage we found, what was most disheartening to see was the endless Beer bottles and plastic bags and chips wrappers that were thrown away carelessly.
As a tourist when someone visits a very fragile ecosystem like Sandakpu, they should be aware that each and every action has sever consequences on the biodiversity of our region.
So here is a request from all of us, please keep our Himalayas clean and Green and please take care to take back the waste you generate…
THANK YOU everyone who participated in this amazing endeavour… while majority of the cleanliness efforts are often directed in the town, particularly in Chowrasta, these volunteers have sent a perfect example, that we need to take care of all our tourist spots, and not just the town centers.
