On December 25, 2016 a group of animal lovers called Vectors of Pawed Ones (VOPO) had raised funds from among its members in order to provide winter jackets for the street dogs of Darjeeling. With the help of Darjeeling Animal Shelter, Lebong, a few of the members had gone around Chowrasta and other parts of the town putting jackets on the dogs.
These dogs have no other way of protecting themselves from the extreme cold weather of Darjeeling. So you can imagine my surprise when the very next day the jackets were gone. Around 50 jackets were ordered and put on the dogs and from that lot only 2 jackets were left.
Now whoever took those jackets probably had good intentions. Maybe they took it for their pet dogs at home since they could not afford to buy one. But stealing is stealing. It’s a crime and stealing from a being that does not even have a voice is even worse. Can you imagine that person petting the street dog while slyly untying the jacket off its back?
The team who put the jackets on those helpless dogs had so much faith that nobody would take those doggie jackets. Maybe a few jackets were taken off by the dogs themselves due to discomfort but not all of them could be gone in one day.
Animal lovers like us hate witnessing a dog shivering and whimpering on the road. Not all dogs are fortunate like our pets at home who have warm beds to sleep at night. Most of the street dogs have nothing but a cold and hard pavement to sleep on.
Vectors of Pawed Ones had thought that this gesture no matter how small would help the street dogs survive this terrible weather. But I guess because of a handful of people of the town, this effort has gone futile.
However, VOPO will not let such things dampen its spirits and continue to work towards improving the condition of the homeless dogs and cats in Darjeeling.
SHAME ON THOSE WHO STOLE THOSE JACKETS!
