TMC, GNLF hold meetings
SUKHAYPOKHARI, 23 Mar 2014: Trinamool Congress has formed a ward committee in Sukhay incorporating all the 10 wards of the Bazaar here. The meeting held under regional committee secretary Pemba Lepcha also discussed the issues relating to LS election and organizational activities. Nima Sherpa and Jony Khatri have been elected the president and secretary of the newly formed ward committee which has 20 executive members in total.
In the meantime Nagari Farm unit of GNLF Village Protection Cell held a meeting here. Sharing happiness over Subash Ghising’s return to the hills the speakers pledged to intensify the party activity saying the time has come to move ahead with full strength. (EOIC)
Cong candidate meets party supporters in Kurseong
KURSEONG, 23 Mar 2014: For the past couple of days, almost all the candidates for Darjeeling Constituency seat have started their respective campaigning in Darjeeling hills. Following the same trend, the Congress candidate from Darjeeling Sujay Ghatak today visited Darjeeling hills and met his supporters at the party office in Kurseong.
Party supporters from different places in the hills were present at the meeting today, where they discussed on different polls strategies. The supporters also briefed the Congress leaders about various problems and issues related to the hills.
Talking to the reporters, Ghatak said that the main agenda of the party is to clear the psychological differences between the plains and the hills. He said Congress has planned many development projects to be implemented in the hills. He added many heavyweight political personalities of the Congress party including Minister of State for Railways Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury is expected to visit the hills and address the public here. 47,250 packets of cigarettes seized
MIRIK, 23 Mar 2014: A 47,250 packets of Nepal produced cigarettes were seized by 21 Battalion SSB at Chabisse while being illegally traded into India. SI SD Chandrashekhar informed the packets were seized at the Indo-Nepal border this morning and handed over to LCA at Pashupati Fatak. He added the man smuggling the packets however managed to flee. MIRIK, 23 Mar 2014: The Soureni-Panighatta branch of GNLF’s women wing Gorkha National Women’s Organization (GNWO) held a meeting here at Soureni Bazaar. The meeting resolved to kick-off poll related activities after GNLF supremo Subash Ghising clarified the party’s stance. However, the women members maintained the primary agenda of the party is attainment of sixth schedule status and Ghising’s decision will be the final on any issues. (EOIC)
Drug peddler nabbed
MIRIK, 23 Mar 2014: Acting on a tip off, Mirik police today nabbed Bazaar resident Md. Ejaz (25) along with 26 files of Spasmo Proxivon tablets. OC Sanjay Kumar Das said Ejaz had been smuggling the banned drugs into the town for sale. Charged under Bengal Drugs and Cosmetics Act sections 18 (C) and 27(B), the accused has been transferred to Kurseong correctional home. (EOIC)
